IOSH Courses

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) pride theselves on being the leading body for health and safety professionals, with over 38,000 individual members. As an independent and not-for-profit organisation, they aim to regulate and steer the profession, maintaining standards and providing impartial, authoritative guidance on health and safety issues.

Only health and safety training providers that have been accredited by IOSH are allowed to offer IOSH courses. This ensures that quality standards are met and that the health and safety training itself sufficiently covers the prescribed IOSH course syllabus.

What Do IOSH Do?

Some of IOSH's many roles include:

  • Regulating the health and safety profession by ensuring that all IOSH members and IOSH accredited training providers conform to a certain level and professional standard
  • Advising and lobbying government on health and safety issues
  • Providing guidance and advice on a range of health and safety issues, including free guides and a free helpline for health and safety, environmental and employment law

An IOSH Course Requires Less Time out of the Workplace than a NEBOSH Course

A Lack Of Time Can Affect Health And Safety Training Decisions

One of the main obstacles in front of those contemplating starting the NEBOSH General Certificate is the fact that it requires two whole weeks out of the workplace in order to attend the taught classes. For a lot of people, no matter how valuable the qualification will be to them in their current or future employment, they simply cannot afford or obtain the time away from the workplace. Some will try and circumvent the issue by having a go at an online course or distance learning option, but these are unsuitable formats for such a detailed and lengthy course, and often result in failed exams and wasted money.

NEBOSH General Certificate or IOSH Course?

Although it cannot really be considered as an alternative to the NEBOSH General Certificate as it is at a lower academic level, an IOSH course provides a good overview of workplace health and safety issues and requires less time away from work. The most lengthy of IOSH courses, the IOSH Managing Safely course, is typically only a three day course when run as an in-house course or as an open course.

Whilst the IOSH Managing Safely is now only three days, the IOSH Directing Safely and IOSH Safety for Senior Executives courses are only one day. For those not in a managerial role, there is the one day IOSH Working Safely course, which highlights the most common risks, hazards and dangers for workers to be aware of in a typical place of work. A requirement for just a single day to be taken out of work can typically be accommodated by most businesses and managers/executives.

For some people though their job role will require a higher level qualification like a NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Diploma, and consequently an IOSH course will not be suitable for them. For others though, particularly individuals working in low-risk places of work, an IOSH course may be enough to cover their needs. It is always worth checking with a knowledgeable health and safety advisor to determine which course is most suitable for you and your job role (currently or in the future), and indeed which one you will require by law in order to be qualified to the required level according to your responsibilities and industry.
