NEBOSH General Certificate

  • Level 3 Qualification
A smiling health and safety worker wearing a protective hard hat

The NEBOSH General Certificate, or NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health to give it its full title, is one of the most popular and widely-held health and safety qualifications in the UK. It is intended to be taken by managers, supervisors and any other employees who require an understanding of general health and safety issues.

The NEBOSH General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, along with the identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge.

The general content of the NEBOSH General Certificate syllabus means it is suitable and relevant for those working in virtually any industry, and is often used as a solid foundation for those going on to further study and specialising in a particular area such as construction site health and safety or fire safety.

The BCF Group are pleased to announce that NEBOSH General Certificate classroom training courses have now resumed.

The health and well-being of our customers and staff members is our top priority, which means that for the foreseeable future, certain safety measures will have to be in place. This includes classrooms configured to allow for social distancing, and a reduction of the number of people able to book on and attend each course.

Exams and Assessments

NEBOSH General Certificate Exams

NEBOSH provide standard exam sittings which are conducted every three months. Some providers enrol their candidates in these exam dates in order to keep costs to a minimum and offer low prices.

Unfortunately though this can mean a wait of up to three months between the conclusion of the course and taking your exams, which is a lot of time to forgot most of what you learnt at the beginning of the course.

This many lost marks will normally result in a failing of one of more unit, no qualification, and the need for a further re-sit (possibly in another three months time!), and of course even more information may have been forgotten by then. So trying to save time and money has actually ended up costing you a lot more of both!

All of our classroom NEBOSH General Certificate courses have the exam on the final day. This ensures that delegates go into the exams with all of the information fresh in their minds, which provides a far better chance of passing first time.

From January 2020 onwards, this course follows the new syllabus. There will only be one exam covering the entire syllabus, rather than a separate exam for the NGC1 and NGC2 units. The course itself will be run over nine days, and on the tenth day there will be a revision session in the morning and the exam in the afternoon. This means delegates no longer need to return to the training centre on the Monday and Tuesday after the course in order to take the exams.

How Are Classroom Courses Run?

NEBOSH classroom training courses for better pass rates

All of our NEBOSH General Certificate classroom courses are run as full-time block weeks, Monday to Friday 9am until approximately 5pm.

Although the NEBOSH General Certificate is available in other formats such as e-learning courses, distance learning, one day a week/month etc, in our many years of experience we have consistently found that full-time block courses with exams scheduled straight after equates to a significantly improved likelihood of delegates passing all of the assessments required for actually achieving the qualification. In-House NEBOSH General Certificate Course

In-House NEBOSH General Certificate Course

For companies who have four or more employees requiring this qualification, an in-house NEBOSH General Certificate training course can be much more cost effective as we charge a daily training rate rather than a per delegate fee. This means that the more people you put on the course the lower the price per head will be and will work out much cheaper than putting them all on an open course.

In-house NEBOSH General Certificate courses, or indeed any in-house health and safety training courses for that matter, also have the added benefit of being run at your premises. Whilst it is certainly possible to run training programmes for your employees at an external location if you do not have the facilities available to accommodate the sessions, one of the biggest advantages of in-house training is having all of your employees come to work as normal. This saves a great deal of hassle which would otherwise occur from having to organise and communicate the location of the training to everyone scheduled to attend, making sure they all know where they are going and on which day, dealing with people who forget and turn up to the workplace as normal etc.

For more information regarding in-house NEBOSH General Certificate training, and the benefits of the NEBOSH General Certificate for you and/or your employees, please call us on 0844 800 3295 or send us an online contact form with your requirements by clicking on the "Contact" tab at the top of the page.

NEBOSH General Certificate a Lot to Learn But Worth It

A manager and workers wearing protective hard hats

When it comes to a general health and safety qualification which is not only recognised pretty much all over the world but also provides information which is applicable and relevant to virtually any industry a person may find themselves working in, there are probably none better than the NEBOSH General Certificate. Not only does the NEBOSH General Certificate course syllabus cover a multitude of different topics including fire safety, hazardous substances/coshh, electrical hazards, a summary of legal requirements and much more, but it is also respected and often demanded by many potential employers who take the health and safety of their workers seriously.

As well as being a comprehensive qualification in its own right, the NEBOSH General Certificate is often taken as a pre-requisite for a NEBOSH Diploma, which is one of the most prestigious qualifications available, and certainly one that requires a tremendous amount of determination and self-discipline to do the work required to complete it. The NEBOSH General Certificate itself consists of ten days' training with an additional day for the exams, along with a workplace practical. This is obviously a lot to learn, and may make the General Certificate too much for some, in which case the four day IOSH Managing Safely course may be a better alternative.

Despite it being a lot of information to learn and require a substantial amount of dedication in order to pass the assessments, those who do so will find the whole process worthwhile when they receive their accredited certificate from NEBOSH. Not only will they have a vast amount of health and safety knowledge which they can put to good use when back at work in terms of helping to prevent accidents and incidents from taking place, but they will also be far more of an attractive candidate for prospective employers who are looking to recruit a person with health and safety qualifications. In fact, many health and safety roles will require an individual to be a holder of the NEBOSH General Certificate to prove their competency with regards to health and safety before even being considered for the position.

Why is Self-Study Important on NEBOSH General Certificate Courses?

Introduction
Revising for an exam using a laptop and making notes

On an accredited health and safety training course including the NEBOSH General Certificate a delegate may believe that because the syllabus is designed for taking students right through from having no previous training or knowledge regarding health and safety to a level where they have a solid understanding and know enough to pass the assessments at the conclusion, that everything is taught by the course tutor.

The reality is that whilst the course tutor will cover the majority of information and talk about each topic, there is still an element of self-study involved in NEBOSH General Certificate courses that delegates need to undertake in order to learn all of the information necessary for the assessments. Just as schools need to issue homework in order to get through an educational syllabus, so too is homework and self-study required on courses like the NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Diploma.

The Importance of Revision

On a similar theme to self-study is the requirement for a suitable level of revision before the assessment. The majority of candidates who fail a NEBOSH General Certificate assessment do so because they have not afforded it the respect and dedication necessary in terms of completing enough revision to allow them to recall the knowledge when they need it in the written exam. A failure to pass the assessments means that no qualification is awarded, which after all is one of the primary aims and objectives of attending NEBOSH General Certificate training in the first place, aside from acquiring the knowledge to work safely and put this wisdom into practice when back at work to minimise the risk of accidents and incidents from taking place of course.

Failing to engage in effective self-study or thorough revision is highly likely to result in a candidate not passing all of the assessment parts that need to be achieved in order to be awarded with the complete NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health parchment. With the cost of such comprehensive training courses being high in relation to shorter ones such as the IOSH Managing Safely for example which is typically run over just four days, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to embrace and accept the need for revision and self-study and to just do it to give you the best possible chance of achieving the qualification. The assessments will not simply be a case of using common sense to answer the questions; they will require detailed answers to specific questions, which is why revision and exam technique is so important.
