The amount of information contained in the syllabus of an ILM qualification means that a classroom course will typically be run over at least two days. For many managers and executives out there, you will know that quite often it is extremely difficult for you to take this time away from the workplace in order to attend a course.
Your level of responsibility and required input makes it hard for you to be absent for this length of time without adversely affecting productivity levels. However much you may want or need an ILM qualification, you just cannot spare the time to attend a classroom course.
For those managers and leaders, whether new to a management role or with some experience, choosing to study for an ILM qualification online is a perfect solution. You can study when you want, at a time convenient to you, which does not interfere with your normal day-to-day duties. This allows you to be there at work when you need to be, providing support and guidance to your employees, and fitting in your studies around these commitments.
One of the key factors in a successful online course programme is the level of support provided. Because you will be sat in front of a computer screen for hours, all by yourself, taking an online course can sometimes feel like a very lonely experience. Some people may be able to muddle through by themselves, but for many, the support they receive makes an essential difference as to whether they successfully complete the programme or not.
As mentioned earlier, ILM qualifications are quite detailed in terms of syllabus content. Unlike a short online course that provides an overview of a particular topic, an online ILM course conducted over the internet will likely stir up a lot of questions and points needing to be clarified. Easy access to tutor support is therefore vital.
Those studying an online ILM qualification with us here at the BCF Group receive unlimited tutor support by phone, Skype and email. We always aim to reply as soon as possible, so that you have the information you need to progress in your studies, rather than having to hang around waiting for an answer. Work can be submitted and feedback received via the internet too, which saves a lot of hassle and time not having to send documents through the post.
As good as an online course and the level of support is, we would still always recommend a classroom course if time allows. Whilst it may involve more travel in having to attend a specific training venue, it is – for most people – a much easier and more successful way to learn when sat in a dedicated training environment.
Although some candidates may be taking the course online sat in their office when they get time during the day, the majority of people who sign up for an online course do so because they can complete the tasks at home. This sounds fine in theory, but in practice many people struggle to separate a working environment from their home where they relax. A home is also filled with distractions such as television and children, which can disturb concentration and delay the completion of learning.
For a more in-depth look at the problems associated with trying to study at home, please see our related health and safety article: The Danger of Spending Money on a NEBOSH General Certificate Online Course which talks about how unexpectedly difficult this can be.
Whilst we would never like to refer to one of our classroom courses as "getting it over with", it is a fact that attending a two day classroom course means you learn all of the information in a short period of time! By taking an online course and trying to study whenever you get a spare moment, or putting it off until next week which looks clearer but your diary ends up getting filled up with other things, you can soon start to find that months have gone by and you are still not much closer to actually achieving the accredited certificate.
This is a particular problem for certain accredited health and safety training courses which have examinations to pass (it’s hard to pass an exam when it’s been so long that you’ve forgotten what you learned at the start!), but even for an ILM qualification a person can soon find they have spent months trying to achieve the qualification.
A classroom course will enable you to get that ILM qualification quicker, and put it to use much sooner.
As much as we pride ourselves on our support for those taking an online course, it will never be the same as having a course tutor right there with you in the room, who is available to answer any questions straight away.
Plus, many delegates comment afterwards on how much they learn from the experiences of other attendees sat on the course with them, who come from different industries and job roles, and approach issues in different ways.
The biggest priorities for most people when considering what format to choose will be cost and convenience. It is true that online courses are less expensive, and if it is impossible to get the time off work to attend a classroom course at a training location, then the decision is pretty much made for you.
But for those that do have a choice about whether to opt for an online or a classroom ILM course, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons talked about above, as there is little point in spending a lot of money on something that you will struggle to complete and achieve.
If you would like to discuss the options with us, and talk in more detail about what is involved with each format, please call us on 0844 800 3295. Alternatively, send us an online contact form by clicking on the "Contact" tab in the menu at the top of the page and we will get in touch with you.
An in-house, bespoke management course is one of the most cost-effective methods of providing training to your management team. Although open courses will provide a tremendous amount of valuable information, it may be the case that not all of it will be 100% relevant to them, and it certainly won't be tailored to your specific industry, working practices and achievement targets.
